Benchmark begins public consultation on increasing cobalt battery metal prices to weekly publishing frequency

Benchmark Mineral Intelligence announced today that it has started a formal public consultation on changes to itsCobalt Price Assessment Methodology.
Increased frequency
Growing demand for cobalt metal from the battery and superalloy industries, combined with more liquid spot activity, has increased the volume and frequency of cobalt metal transactions, allowing for more regular price publication.
Benchmark proposes to move its cobalt battery metal grade from alternate weeks to weekly frequency to give a more comprehensive assessment of price trends, aligning with existing CIF Asia cobalt hydroxide and EXW China cobalt sulphate publication frequency.
Following feedback and discussion with a number of market participants, Benchmark proposes to increase the regularity of its EXW Europe cobalt battery metal pricing to weekly, to be published on Wednesdays, by 4 p.m. (London).
As the lithium ion battery industry continues to develop, the frequency and volume of battery material trading is increasing. To continue to give an accurate and comprehensive assessment of price movements, Benchmark continues to monitor and evolve the frequency with which its market leading price assessments are published.
The proposed changes would impact the following grade currently collected by Benchmark:
Cobalt battery metal, EXW Europe, Min 99.8%
