Nickel mining industry sees improvement in gender balance disclosure

Thenickel mining industryhas significantly improved its gender balance reporting practices compared to this time last year.
Reporting on workforcegender balanceis akey element of overall environmental, social and governance performancein the mining industry.
“You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” said Sarah Colbourn, Benchmark’s head of sustainability. “As with any topic when it comes to sustainability, transparency is key.”
What is the gender distribution of operating miners’ workforces?
Compared to this time last year, the average workforce gender balance of operating miners which disclose these statistics has remained largely unchanged.
“A gender-balanced workforce is key from an equality perspective, but also for companies themselves as it helps support diversity of voices and perspectives,” Colbourn said.

Advancing gender equality is one of the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDG).
BHP is one nickel miner that has set ambitious goals to improve the gender balance of its workforce. In 2016 the company’s work force was 18% female. By 2024 this had risen to 37%.
“Mining is a male-dominated industry, and year on year we are seeing progress, though, of course, there is more to be done,” Colbourn said. “At a time when there are reports of labour shortages in mining, bolstering diversity is increasingly key.”
