Stellantis-CATL JV to bolster Europe’s LFP build out

Stellantis and CATL have confirmed a €4.1 billion ($4.3 billion) investment to produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells in Spain, furthering Europe’s growing LFP capacity.

The two companies hadannounced a memorandum of understandingto build a European LFP gigafactory in November 2023. The facility is expected to begin production by the end of 2026 and could reach a capacity of up to 50 gigawatt hours (GWh), as well as being carbon neutral, according to the companies.

“Collaboration between the two has been rumoured for a while, but the revealed commitment solidifies the trend of major cell and automakers in Europe restrategising to incorporate LFP batteries into production plans,” said Evan Hartley, Research Manager at Benchmark.

“The 50 GWh facility also confirms a further potential downgrading of ACC within Stellantis’ battery plans, though the producer will remain key for NCM supply,” added Hartley.

How have European EV sales performed in 2024?

European EV sales fell by 2.9% year-to-date in October 2024, according to Rho Motion. There have also been a number ofgigafactory capacity cancellationsin the region this year.

“Europe is in a very precarious position right now where it has set itself tough goals for very high EV penetration which at current 2024 rates will not be met in future,” said Will Roberts, Automotive Research Lead at Rho Motion.

“Achieving the high EV penetration rates seen in Norway and China is going to require European governments – both national and the EU – to support the industry,” added Roberts.

Stellantis aims for 100% of its European passenger car sales to be electric in 2030. Offering more affordable EVs will be essential to this and better enabled by lower cost LFP cells.

What is the outlook for LFP in Europe?

By 2030, Europe is forecast to have 213 GWh of LFP capacity, according to BenchmarkGigafactory Assessment.

What role do Chinese companies play in Europe’s LFP supply?

Europe’s more open relations with China – relative to the US – mean Chinese companies account for a significant amount of the region’s LFP projects.
